UN FAO applauds Sheikh Hasina’s dynamic leadership

Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy Md. Shamim Ahsan presented his credentials as a Permanent Representative to Qu Dongyu, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
Qu Dongyu, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), applauded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s dynamic leadership.
He praised Bangladesh for ensuring food security for 165 million people despite being one of the top ten most populous countries in the world.
Qu Dongyu made the remarks while Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy Md. Shamim Ahsan presented his credentials as a Permanent Representative to the UN FAO on Friday.
“We can learn a lot from Bangladesh as the country’s solutions are affordable and easy to implement,” Qu said.
Ambassador Shamim Ahsan thanked him for formally accepting him as the Permanent Representative of the FAO and for his high views on Bangladesh’s achievements.
The Ambassador assured full support to the Director General’s dynamic leadership in building the FAO as a more efficient, transparent and participatory institution.
The Permanent Representative noted the commendable role of the agency in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic challenge, ensuring food and nutrition, food security, agricultural environment in Bangladesh for more than 40 years, productivity of small and marginal farmers and increasing income.
The Ambassador requested the FAO to continue its active support in the transformation plan of the agricultural sector in Bangladesh to deal with the changed situation.
The Ambassador and Permanent Representative thanked the Director General for recommending the appointment of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the Co-Chair at the International Leadership Forum on Single Health on Anti-Microbial Resistance and said that “Bangladesh has a great opportunity to play a leading role in the regional arena.”
Noting that Bangladesh has provided shelter to 1.1 million Rohingya refugees for humanitarian reasons over the last four years, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative thanked the FAO for its important role in improving the living standards of the local people of Cox’s Bazar, increasing agricultural production and increasing the income and capacity of small and marginal farmers.
The Permanent Representative of Bangladesh gave an invitation to the Director General to visit Bangladesh to attend the Asia-Pacific FAO Regional Conference to be held in Bangladesh for the first time (March 8 to 11, 2022), which he welcomed.
Due to the situation caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19), the event was held on the Zoom platform.
