US President Donald Trump will not attend the United Nations General Assembly in person next week, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said Thursday.

He said the president is not directly attending the 75th session of the UN General Assembly. Due to health risks, the session will be held mainly through video conferencing.

The decision marks an about-face for Mr. Trump, who last month said he wanted to deliver his speech in the General Assembly hall in New York, even if other world leaders are staying away due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The main session of this year's UN General Assembly will begin on September 21 and end on September 29. In this episode, world leaders will deliver their views through video give speeches.

In opening remarks Tuesday, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized this year's focus on the global response to the coronavirus pandemic plus “peace and security, disarmament, human rights, gender equality and sustainable development.”
