A bus passenger was killed when a train smashed a night-coach bus at the Sonakhali railway crossing in Kaliakair, Gazipur on Saturday morning. At least five people were injured in the incident.
The injured have been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex. However, the names of the victims were not immediately known, said Joydebpur railway junction police camp.
After the incident, North Bengal’s rail link with Dhaka has been temporarily closed.
Mostafizur Rahman, director of the train, said the intercity Nilsagar Express train from Chilahati was heading to Dhaka via Kaliakair upazila in Gazipur around 4:30 am. “As the train was leaving the Kaliakair Hi-Tech Park area, it collided with a bus carrying workers at a rail crossing in the area,” he also said.
Initially, it was believed that the gatekeeper on duty at the level crossing did not open the gate on time, Mostafizur Rahman added.
Joydebpur railway junction police camp in-charge SI Md. Abdul Mannan said an unidentified woman and five others were injured in the collision. They were sent to the hospital. “Upon receiving the news, the fire service personnel of Kaliakair are trying to move the bus which was stuck in front of the engine of the train,” he added.
