Traditional horse race in Madhupur

Hundreds of years old traditional horse race contest of Tangail’s Madhupur has taken place at Durgapur ground of the upazila on Saturday, with the initiative of Bangabandhu Club.

Around people with 20-25 horses from different areas took part in the contest.

Lt. Colonel Asadul Islam Azad (retd) inaugurated the event. “To sustain the culture of Bengal, such game is needed in every area,” he said.

Ramjan Ali of Durgapur area said, “The races are very rare. This contest has been held for several years in the area to uphold this tradition of Bengali village.”

Children are also notable among participants

The 12-year-old boy Nakib said,”I am participating in horse race contest for 2years. I enjoy participating and so far won a lot prizes.”

Sakhipur Upazila contestant Saiful Islam said, “It costs us a lot of money besides the organizers to participate in this competition.  Horse is to rent. There are costs to raising a horse. Nevertheless, such a traditional game should be organized. Then interest in nurturing horse and participating in the competition will be created.

Mahmuda Begum said this race is an ancient tradition. Thousands of people enjoy the game just because people like it. 

Madhupur Upazila Chairman Parishad Chharwar Alam Khan Abu, UNO of Madhupur Arifa Zahura, Zilla Parishad Panel Chairman Khandaker Shafi Uddin Moni and Madhupur Municipality Mayor Masud Parvez were present among others on the event.
