Traditional boat race on Jamuna held with festive atmosphere

The traditional boat race of rural Bengal was held on the Jamuna River. Centering this event, a festive atmosphere was created in the entire area of Tangail Sadar upazila.
The day-long event was held on Sunday (September 19) on the Jamuna River at Maltipara, Garagachha, Gandhabpur and Kazi Bazar areas of Hugra UP. The event was organized at the initiative of people from all walks of life.
A total of 45 boats of different colors including Prothom Alo, Sonar Bangla, Sonar Tori, Jamunar Tori participated in the event. Sonar Tori boat from Bhuapur became first in the competition.
“I have been watching the boat race for 60 years. I can’t stay at home whenever I hear the news of boar racing. Even today, I came to see this event at a cost of more than Tk 500. It feels good to see the traditional boat race,” said Ashraf Ali of Belkuchi in Sirajganj.
Tangail-5 (Sadar) MP Alhaj Chanowar Hossain was the chief guest on the occasion. District Awami League joint general secretary Khandaker Ashrafuzzaman Smriti, Sadar UP Chairman Shahjahan Anchari and Tangail Municipality Mayor SM Sirajul Haque Alamgir were present as special guests.
“We have to deal with the floods in riverine Bangladesh. Boat race has been organized in different areas during the rainy season since ancient times. The people from some villages organized the boat race for entertainment after the post-COVID period,” said MP Chanowar Hossain.
It was great to see the boat race in a beautiful environment. Apart from Tangail, many people have come from five or six other nearby districts to take part in the boat race and watch. In the future, boat races will be organized on a larger scale on Jamuna River, he added.
