There is not much time left to start the Olympic Games. The 100-day countdown has already begun. However, there is still a possibility that the Olympic Games likely to be postponed, said an official of the Japanese government.
“This year’s Olympic Games could be canceled if the coronavirus situation worsens,” he said.
“If it becomes impossible to curb this (Olympics), we should decide to cancel it,” said Liberal Democratic Party general secretary Toshihiro Nikai in a televised interview – Reuters reported, quoting news agency Kyodo.
The world’s largest sporting event is already a year behind schedule. Preparations were underway to organize it without spectators in the stadium if necessary.
However, the Covid-19 situation in Japan is still on the rise. The capital, Tokyo, has seen more virus cases since the government lifted the state of emergency.
Meanwhile, the government is making all preparations to start the Olympics from July 23 by imposing other restrictions on social distance and spectators. The traditional Olympic torch relay is also planned to be short-circuited.
According to various polls, there is “very little public opinion” in favor of hosting the Olympics in Japan. The issue of “postponing the Olympics” in the country has already become a trend on Twitter. There have been more than 35,000 tweets on the issue today.
Shigeru Omi, Japan’s chief medical adviser, and Hiroshi Nishiura, a professor at Kyoto University, said the new strain was the “fourth wave” of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. As a result, they requested to postpone the Olympic Games for the overall consideration.
However, the organizers of the Olympics and the National Olympic Committee of Japan have not yet commented on the matter.
