Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has said there are enough salt reserves across the country. Therefore, he ordered to fine and send jail those who hike the price of salt.
He said this in response to a question from reporters at a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.
The Commerce Minister said the traders are taking unrealistic chances regarding salt, only spreading a rumor. I have come to know that the government has stopped importing salt for the benefit of salt farmers. Even then, there is no reason for salt price hike.
The minister said that the demand for salt in the country is about 1 lakh metric tons per month. Now there are more than 6,50,000 metric tonnes of salt have stock. So, there is no region of salt crisis.
He also directed the director-general of Dhaka Consumer Rights Protection Department Bablu Kumar Saha to monitor the market. And asked for fined and jailed those who hike the price of salt.
