The testimony against Majnu, the only accused in a case filed over the rape of a Dhaka University (DU) student in the capital’s Kurmitola area, has ended. The court fixed November 12 for presenting arguments.
Judge Begum Mosammat Quamrunnahar of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 fixed the day for arguments on Thursday.
Earlier, accused Majnu was produced before the court from jail. Testimony then began in his presence. State-appointed lawyer Rabiul Islam Robi questioned the witnesses on behalf of Majnu.
On August 26, the virtual court framed charges against Majnu in the case. With this, the formal trial against the accused started.
Then on September 20, the plaintiff in the case and the father of the rape victim first testified in court. The next day, the victim student in the case testified against the accused Majnu and identified Majnu as a rapist. Of the total 24 witnesses in the case, 20 have testified.
Earlier on August 16, the same court accepted the chargesheet in the case and fixed August 26 for the hearing. Detective Branch Inspector Abu Bakar Siddique, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the chargesheet on March 16 against Majnu to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka.
On January 5 this year, the DU student was raped when she was walking from Kurmitola bus stop to a friend’s house near Shewra Railgate around 7:30 pm after getting off a university bus.
Following the day, the victim’s father filed the case with Cantonment Police Station, accusing unknown people. On January 8, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Majnu from the Shewra area.
