Testimony against former CJ SK Sinha on June 27

A Dhaka court has fixed June 27 for hearing the testimony against 11 people, including former Chief Justice SK Sinha, for allegedly embezzling Tk 4 crore from the then Farmers Bank (now Padma Bank) and laundering the money abroad.

Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 set the new date. The testimony of 20 out of 21 witnesses, in this case, has been completed, said concerned court sources on Wednesday.

The other accused are former Farmers Bank managing director AKM Shameem, first vice-presidents Swapan Kumar Roy and Shafiuddin Ashkari, senior executive vice-president Gazi Salahuddin, vice-president M Lutful Huque, bank’s entrepreneur director Md Mahbubul Huque Chisty alias Babul Chisty, bank clients Md Shahjahan, Niranjan Chandra Saha, his uncle Ranajit Chandra Saha, and Ranajit's wife Santree Roy.

Of them, Farmers Bank's entrepreneur director Md Mahbubul Huque Chisty alias Babul Chisty is now in jail, while Farmers Bank managing director AKM Shameem, first vice-presidents Swapan Kumar Roy and Shafiuddin Ashkari, senior executive vice-president Gazi Salahuddin, vice-president M Lutful Huque, bank clients Md Shahjahan and Niranjan Chandra are now on bail.

Former Chief Justice SK Sinha, first vice-president Shafiuddin Ashkari, Ranajit Chandra Saha and Ranajit's wife Santree Roy are now absconding.

Meanwhile, ACC director Syed Iqbal Hossain, the plaintiff in the case, testified in court on August 18 last year.

Earlier on August 13, 2020, the formal trial began with the formation of charges in the case. On February 20, 2020, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayes ordered the case to be transferred to Dhaka Special Judge-4. Earlier, on January 5, the court issued arrest warrants against 11 people, including SK Sinha.

Earlier, ACC director Benazir Ahmed, the investigating officer in the case, filed the chargesheet in court on December 10, 2019.
