The government has decided to extend the term of stay in BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s sentence for another six months keeping all the previous conditions in place.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told reporters at the Secretariat in the capital on Sunday.

He said Khaleda Zia’s younger brother made a petition to extend the release period subject to conditions. “We have scrutinized and approved it. The conditions will remain the same as before.”

The Home Minister further said she (Khaleda Zia) will take treatment at home, can’t go abroad. With this, the conditions that were imposed before will remain in force.

Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years in prison on February 8, 2018, in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. On October 29 of the same year, Khaleda Zia was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Tk 10 lakh including a non-payment of a further six months imprisonment in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

When the COVID pandemic broke out in March last year, the government suspended Khaleda Zia’s sentence and released her for six months on conditions on an executive order at the request of her family.

Khaleda Zia’s family appealed for permanent release when her first phase of release expired on August 25 last year. In the second phase, the government extended her release for six months from September 25. Later on March 25, the release period was extended for another six months.
