Mahendra Singh Dhoni, considered one of the most successful captains of the Indian Premier League (IPL), in IPL has been leading Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since 2008 and has never played for them under any other captain in IPL.
But it might not be surprised if MS was seen in playing for Mumbai Indians(MI) instead of CSK as MI were ready to spend huge money on him but had to back out towards the end only for their icon player Sachin Tendulkar's huge salary.
When the first IPL auction was held MS Dhoni was the biggest face to enter the auction as he just led Team India to a T20 World Cup win in September 2007. MI and CSK continued to bid till the end to buy this wicketkeeper-batsman even after Dhoni's price touched the USD 9,00,000-mark.
However, in the end, Mumbai had to back out due to Sachin Tendulkar's huge salary while Tendulkar was the 'icon' cricketer of the team. According to the rules, the icon cricketer has to be paid 15% extra salary than the most expensive cricketer in the team.
And, there was no way that MI could have built a team after paying Sachin's and Dhoni's salary as CSK bought Dhoni for USD 1.5 million. So, had to spend their money wisely.
It is to be noted that CSK didn't have an icon player and they weren't concerned about the 15% extra salary for him.
Being a Ranchi cricketer no team could take Dhoni as an icon player and CSK took advantage of that opportunity. Dhoni had brought three IPL titles for CSK so far.
