A teenage girl was hacked to death allegedly by opponents over land dispute at Chandian in Cumilla Friday night. Police recovered the body from a pond next to their house on Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Salma Akter, daughter of Soleman Bepari of Basantapur in Gallai union of the upazila.

According to local sources, Jannat, a neighbor of the deceased, entered the house on Saturday morning after seeing the door and back fence open. Not finding anyone in the house at that time, she called on Soleman. When Soleman returned home, he could not find his daughter and started looking around. At one stage, he saw his daughter's body floating in the pond 500 yards away from the house.

The father of the deceased, Soleman Bepari, said that he had a long-running dispute with his nephew over the land. On September 25, they beat up Salma's mother. They also attacked the Soleman Bepari on Friday night. To save his life, he took shelter to neighbor Abdur Rahman's house. His daughter Salma was alone at home at that time. The opponent took the chance and hacked Salma and cut her throat and threw her into the pond water.

Chandina Police Station OC Mohammad Arifur Rahman said the body was recovered from the spot. The inquest report found injury marks on the neck and various parts of the body. Initially, it is believed that Salma was killed by her father's opponent in a land dispute.
