Al least 33 brick kilns are existing, which have been built without having any approval, in Matiranga upazila in Khagrachhari and the owners of these kilns are evading tax about a crore of taka every year.
According to the district administration data, 10 of the 33 brick kilns have been listed in value-added tax. However, these kilns were banned as in the fiscal year of 2018-19 the owners evaded tax Tk 28 lakhs.
Sushant Pal, sub-tax commissioner of the district, said that every kiln has an obligation to pay tax at the rate of Tk 3 lakh per year. But due to non-payment of timely tax, the activities of the kilns have been stopped.
