Tarique Rahman sentenced to 2 years in prison

A Narail court today sentenced BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman to two years in jail in a defamation case filed over offensive and obscene remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The court also sentenced him to six more months imprisonment in case of failure to pay a fine of Tk 10,000.

Narail Judicial Magistrate Court-2 judge Amatul Morsheda handed down the verdict at around 11am on Thursday.

Additional PP Advocate Sanjeev Kumar Basu was the plaintiff's lawyer in the case. He expressed satisfaction over the two-year imprisonment and fine imposed by Tareq Rahman.

The plaintiff in the case was Shahjahan Biswas, a former commander of Kalia Upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad and an Awami League activist from Bendarchar village.

It is mentioned in the case that BNP senior vice chairman Tareque Rahman made offensive remarks about Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the great hero of the liberation war. His statement was caused a defamation to the pro-liberation people.

The judge handed down the sentence as the case was proved beyond a reasonable doubt after more than five years of witness testimony. Accused Tareque Rahman is currently staying in London.
