Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and M Atiqul Islam

Awami League has nominated Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) incumbent Mayor M Atiqul Islam as its mayoral candidates for the elections to Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and DNCC respectively.

The party's General Secretary Obaidul Quader announced the candidates' name at a press conference at the party president’s Dhanmondi political office on Sunday.

Earlier on Saturday evening, AL Local Government Nomination Board sat in a meeting at prime minister's official residence Ganobhaban with Prime Minister and AL President Sheikh Hasina in the chair to pick the party contestants for the elections to the two city corporations.   

The current Mayor Saeed Khokon was dropped from the list of Awami League candidates in the DSCC election. The ruling party gave the green light to its MP Taposh to run for mayor of DSCC and chose the incumbent DNCC mayor Atiqul to again run for mayor of DNCC. 

The elections of two city corporations scheduled to be held on January 30. The Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used in the polling. Voting will be held from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on that day.

At the press conference, Awami League presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, joint general secretary Mahbub ul Alam Hanif, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, organizing secretary Ahmed Hossain, SM Kalam, Afzal Hossain, publicity and publication secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, Science and Technology Affairs Secretary Abdus Sabur, Deputy Office Secretary Sayem Khan were present.
