The High Court on Wednesday directed the authorities of the Dhaka University (DU) to take necessary steps to hold Dhaka University Central Student’s Union (DUCSU) election within the next six months.
The HC bench of Justice Syed Md Dastagir Hossain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order after disposing of a six-year-old rule.
27 years ago on June 6, 1990, the last elections to the DUCSU took place. On numerous occasions, student organisations, especially the left-leaning ones, demanded the polls.
In 2012, 25 DU students filed a writ petition seeking an order from the High Court for the authorities to take immediate steps to hold elections to the DUCSU.
Later, the court issued a rule why the authorities’ failure to hold the polls should not be deemed illegal on April 8, 2018. The education secretary and the registrar and the proctor of the university were made respondents.
The hearing on the rule ended on Tuesday.
