Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury condoles at the death of senior parliamentarian. Opposition leader Rowshan Ershad and Jatiya Party chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad mourned.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of the party and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader and BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir mourned the death of the veteran leader of Awami League.
Syed Ashraf was suffering from lung cancer for a long time. Due to serious illness, he took leave from parliament on September 18.
Former Awami League General Secretary was elected as the candidate of Kishoreganj-3 constituency in the 11th Parliamentary Elections.
Syed Ashraf was absent on the oath of new MPs on Thursday morning. Later, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said that he has applied for extended time for the oath.
Within a few hours later, the news of Syed Ashraf’s death was confirmed from the Prime Minister's Office.
Syed Ashraful Islam is the son of Bangladesh’s first temporary President Syed Nazrul Islam. He was staying in the UK for a long time after his father’s assassination, was re-elected as the MP of the Awami League nomination in Kishoreganj-1 constituency in 1996. After this election, in 2001, 2008 and 2014 and last 2018, this political election won the seat for five times.
He was the Minister of Local Government of the Grand Alliance Government in 2008.
Syed Ashraful Islam, son of Syed Nazrul Islam, a close associate of Bangabandhu was born on January 1, 1952, in Mymensingh town. He is the father of a daughter. His wife Shila Islam died in October 2017.
