Sweet potato becomes boon for Narsingdi char people

Cultivation of sweet potato on the abandoned char land in three Upazilas of the Narsingdi district has brought smiles to the face of poor farmers. 

The poor farmers of Narsingdi Sadar, Raipura and Belabo Upazilas prefer to cultivate sweet potato on the abandoned char
land as its production cost is less than other crops and only a little labour is required for its production.

Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension Shovan Kumar Dhar said the poor char people started cultivating the sweet potato on the char land of the Upazilas a few years back with a view to changing their fate.

There is no actual statistics on the cultivation of sweet potato in the district, he said, adding this year farmers have got bumper yield of the potato and farmers are happy with market prices. 

Abul Hossain, a farmer of Mirjarchar union of Raipura Upazila, has cultivated sweet potato on 20 bighas of land, farmer Habib Ullah of Alokbali char of Sadar Upazila cultivated potato on 10 bighas and Taleb Hosain of char Uslabo union of Belabo Upazila cultivated potato on 12 bighas.

They said the production of sweet potato is excellent and they got 60 to 80 maunds of the crop on per bigha of land.
