Super Driveway will be constructed from Cox’s Bazar to Satkhira. For this, the government has adopted the new mega plan to protect the coastal dams.
As many as 50 million people in 25 coastal districts are at risk as about one-third of the country’s embankments have been severely damaged. And to tackle that risk, the design is being changed to make the dam sustainable.
New plans will also be taken for maintenance after the construction of the dam. Four projects have been formulated for this purpose. Work on these projects will start in the current fiscal year and will be completed in two to three years.
Regarding mega projects, Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Haque Shamim said four projects worth Tk 8,000 crore have been formulated under the direction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to build sustainable embankments in coastal areas.
“Projects worth Tk 957.38 crore in Polder No. 14 of Khulna, Tk 1,201.12 crore in Polder No. 31, Tk 3,674.03 crore in Polder No. 5 of Satkhira and Tk 997.78 crore in Polder No. 15 have been taken up,” he said.
Besides, there are plans to construct a super driveway from Cox’s Bazar to Satkhira to protect the dam. Not only embankments but special initiatives have been taken for the development of the entire coast, the Deputy Minister added.
According to the Water Development Board (BWBD), there is about 17,000 km of dams in the country. Of these, 5,758 km of dams in the coastal region are at risk.
