Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok has been placed under house arrest by military forces in Sudan and detained several members of the country’s civilian leadership, reported Dubai-based broadcaster Al-Hadith TV.

Accroding to the broadcaster, citing unidentified sources, said a military force besieged the Sudanese prime minister’s home on Monday before placing him under house arrest.

The Al-Hadith TV said industry minister Ibrahim al-Sheikh, information minister Hamza Baloul, and media adviser to the prime minister Faisal Mohammed Saleh and other civilian officials were taken into custody.

Mohammed al-Fiky Suliman, a spokesman for Sudan’s ruling sovereign council, and the governor of Sudan’s capital Khartoum, Ayman Khalid were also arrested.

Sudan is being currently tense since a failed coup plot last month unraveled bitter relationships between military and civilian leaders following the failure of the country’s long-time leader Omar al-Bashir.

Al-Bashir was toppled after months of street protests in 2019, and a political transition agreed after his removal was meant to lead to elections by the end of 2023. - Al Jazeera.
