Several farmers of Mahilara UP in Gaurnadi upazila of Barishal have got huge success for the first time by cultivating sunflowers on the fallow land.

While visiting the scene, the images of sunflower cultivation in several fallow lands were seen in West Bezhar and Bilbagram areas of Mahilara UP.  Flower lovers are flocking in the farmer’s field from morning to afternoon amid lockdown to see the beauty of flowers. They are enjoying the beauty of flowers as well as taking selfies and sharing those on social media.

Abdul Latif Sikder, a farmer from West Bezhar village, said with the help of the Mahilara UP chairman, he planted sunflower seeds on 32 acres of fallow land with free sunflower seeds and fertilizer from the agriculture office. He hopes to make a profit as the yield is good in the first year.

Chattar Hawladar, a resident of the Bilbagram area, said he planted sunflower on 33 acres of land after getting free fertilizer and seeds from the agriculture office. He also mentioned that “sunflower cultivation is more profitable at low cost”.

Bipasha Guha, a florist who came to enjoy the beauty of sunflowers, said she came with her children and took selfies after seeing the beauty of sunflower fields on Facebook.

“I cannot able to go anywhere with children for a long time due to COVID. There is no chance to get out of the house for the ongoing strict lockdown due to the second wave of the pandemic,” she said, adding as these sunflower fields are near her house, she got the opportunity to visit the fields along with her children.

Mahilara UP Chairman Saikat Guha Piklu said the Union Parishad has been urging the farmers along with the Agriculture Department to bring all the fallow lands of UP under cultivation. In its continuation, some ideal farmers including Abdul Latif and Chattar Hawladar of the UP have succeeded in cultivating sunflower in the fallow land. “Sunflower oil has great demand in the market as it is healthy.”

Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Mamunur Rahman said sunflower has been planted in 13 hectares of land in the upazila. Of these, 110 farmers have been given seeds and fertilizers through incentives.
