`Steps will be taken to increase onion production`

Different steps will be taken to increase onion production in the country, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said.

He said this while answering a question of journalists at Kushtia Circuit House on Friday.

The Commerce Minister said that onions production in the country is 25 percent less compared to demand. The government is taking various plans to increase onion production.

Stating that the reserves of rice are sufficient to meet the demand, he said that if any intermediary beneficent get rewarded from the increase in the price of rice, the Ministry of Food must take strict action against them.

Referring to the city elections, Tipu Munshi said voter attendance was less in some elections. People now want fair votes. Therefore, the EVM system has been adopted to observe a fair vote. He hoped that voting in EVM system would increase voter presence.

Kushtia Deputy Commissioner Md. Aslam Hossain, additional police superintendent Mostafizur Rahman and government officials were present. Later, the minister paid homage to the memory of father of the nation by offering floral wreaths at the statue of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Kushtia Collectorate premises.
