Road development interrupted in Sunamganj

Development activities of a 10km Dharmapasha -Jayashree Road is remaining unfinished for a long time. It causes severe suffering for millions of people of the district.

Local sources informed, Under the Rural Transport Improvement Project (RTIP), about 10 kilometer road development works worth of Tk21crore, were started with World Bank’s funding in 2007. A few days later, the project order has been canceled due to nominated ‘Project Builders Ltd’s failure to complete the job in time. When the tenders were invited again, ‘Manjurul Ahsan and Company’ was nominated for the new contract. They started work on 5.1 kilometer section on December 29, 2010, at a cost of Tk13Crore and 20Lakhs.

Despite having unfinished the project, the then upazila acting engineer Nurul Alam Chowdhury and Sunamganj's former Executive Engineer Md. Tamzid certified that the work was completed without verification.

Sources informed, in this incident ACC deputy director Subhash Chandra Datta filed a case with the Dharmapasha police station on Oct 4, 2016, against the accused, including Tamzid Sarwar, who embezzled Tk1 crore 2 lakh 42 thousand 334.

Shafiqul Islam Mia, a local sufferer said “As the road was not renovated, more than 3 kilometers of road traffic from the Kandapara village to Jayshree Bazar has been unusable. We do not get any benefits even after claiming the solution. We are drawing the attention of the Prime Minister.”

It is found that most people of Jayashree, Sukhair Rajapur (north) and Sukhair Rajapur (south) unions of Sadar upazila, Tahirpur and Jamalganj upazila under Sunamgonj district has been suffering worst for years.

Sanjay Roy Chowdhury also Jayashree up chairman said, “In the rainy season, different places of the road become submerged and it cannot be used in dry season too. The public is in the middle of a great dilemma.”

Dharmapasa LGED Engineer Shah Abdul Oadud informed that reconstruction of this road may start on next year.

On the other hand, Sunamganj LGED Executive Engineer, Siddiqur Rahman said, ‘the development activities of the road is delaying due to case complexity.’
