The people of Someshwari river bank of Durgapur in Netrakona are passing days with the fear of river erosion. Meanwhile, numerous installations have gone to the river. Shibganj Bazar has fallen new threat again due to lack of embankment.

Locals have been demanding to construct a permanent dam for 50 years. Apart from the construction of the dam, the Upazila Administration has assured to take immediate steps to protect houses, buildings and others Installation.

Although there is no water during the dry season, in the rainy season the mountainous river Someshwari becomes a horror. Every year, the downstream area is flooded. The sharpness of river erosion increased in 1991. In 2010, the permanent dam was constructed in the postal area but it was less than necessary. So even if there is a dam, there is no escape from the erosion of Durgapur Municipality.

Mizan Munshi, a resident of municipal town, said that during the rainy season the Someshwari river becomes horrible like Padma, Meghna. Many houses washed away by river erosion of the two sides. More erosion could happen if there does not build a permanent dum in two kilometers soon.

The municipal council councilor Sachchu Mia said that everything is negligible to Shamseshwari river. We have repeatedly demanded permanent dams, the administration is giving assurance. But there is no progress in construction of dam till now. Meanwhile, river erosion is going on day by day. At any moment the coastal structures can wash away by river erosion.

Durgapur UNO Farzana Khanam said that the embankment to protect Durgapur city has been threatened by sand lifting from Someswari river. Because of this, the river erosion can not be prevented. Steps will be taken to stop sand mining. Steps will be taken to protect the river banks.
