Sifat-Shipra to be witnesses in Sinha murder case

Legal experts believe that Stamford University students Shahedul Islam Sifat and Shipra Rani Debnath could be key witnesses in the murder case of retired Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan. In the meantime, they will be interrogated, said RAB.

RAB said that since the incident took place in front of Sifat, it is important to know his statement first. After learning the statements of Sifat and Shipra, former Teknaf Police Station OC Pradeep Kumar Das and others will be quizzed on remand. The seven accused have not been remanded yet as Sifat's statement needs to know beforehand.

Former law minister Barrister Shafiq Ahmed said if the allegations against Sifat and Shipra were not true, they could dismiss the case or apply for quashed. Then they can be witnesses if they want. For this, they will have to apply to the court themself or through a lawyer.

Retired Army Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was killed in police firing at Baharchhara police check-post in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar on July 31. Police filed three separate cases under the Murder and Narcotics Act at Teknaf Police Station and Ramu Police Station. Shahedul Islam Sifat and Shipra Rani Dev Nath, who were with Rashed Khan, were arrested and sent to jail.

Later, on August 5, Sinha's sister Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous filed a murder case against nine people, including Inspector Liaquat and OC Pradeep Kumar Das, in the Cox's Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court. On August 6, seven accused, including dismissed OCs Pradeep and Liaquat, surrendered before the Cox's Bazar Senior Judicial Court.

During the hearing, RAB applied for remand 10 days remand for each accused. The court granted Inspector Liaquat, OC Pradeep and SI Nanda Dulal Rakshit for seven days remand. The other four were ordered to be interrogated in jail gate for two days. The court issued arrest warrants against the remaining two accused.

RAB interrogated 4 people in jail gate for two days. OC Pradeep, Inspector Liaquat and SI Nanda Dulal Rakshit are asked to be interrogated in RAB custody.

Shipra Rani Debnath, a student of the Film and Media Department at Stamford University and an associate of Sinha who was sent to jail in a case filed by Ramu police station, was released on bail on Sunday. On the other hand, Shahedul Islam Sifat, who also was with Major Sinha Md. Rashed Khan was secured bail in two cases filed by Teknaf police station.

Earlier, Cox’s Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrate Judge Tamanna Farah granted bail at around 11:00 am.

At the same time, the court has handed over the investigation of Sifat’s case to RAB on the petition of two defendants.
