Shitalakshya launch capsize: SKL-3’s 14 staff detained

Members of the Gazaria Coast Guard in Munshiganj have detained 14 crew members of a cargo ship SKL-3 accused of killing 35 people in a launch capsizing after the cargo ship collided with it on the Shitalakshya River.
They were apprehended from the Meghna River in Gazaria around 2:00 pm on Thursday. Later, 14 detainees were handed over to Narayanganj Naval Police.
The bodies of 35 people, including children, have been recovered so far from the incident.
Narayanganj Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nahida Barik confirmed the matter.
Meanwhile, the probe committee formed by the district administration has started an investigation into the launch capsizing incident. A seven-member probe body headed by Additional District Magistrate Khadija Taheri Bobby was formed.
The passenger launch MV Sabit Al Hasan, which left the BIWTA terminal at around 6:00 pm on Sunday, was hit from behind by a cargo ship SKL-3 in the city’s Coal Ghat area. Later, the launch capsized. In the incident, some people were able to swim ashore but many were missing. The district administration and BIWTA have set up two committees to investigate the incident.
