The ferry services on the Shimulia-Kathalbari route were suspended due to the navigability crisis. A ferry got stuck in the China Channel of Louhajang on its way to Shimulia from Kanthalbari around 6 am.
Safayet Ahmed, co-manager of BIWTC’s Shimulia Ghat, said the ‘ferry Comilla’ was stranded in the Louhajang Channel on its way to Shimulia from Kanthalbari. After that, all the ferries on the Shimulia-Kathalbari route were called off to avoid any kind of accident.
He added that the channel needs to have at least 8 feet of water for operating any ferry. But due to siltation there, the water depth is 6 feet now. Dredging continues to return navigability. Hundreds of vehicles are waiting to cross the two banks as the ferry services were called off.
BIWTA’s naval inspector Md. Soleiman said 87 launches and more than 350 speedboats were operating their activities in the Shimulia-Kathalbari route. However, due to the closure of the ferry, the passenger pressure on the launch and speedboat has increased.
