Ferry services on the Shimulia-Kathalbari route resumed on early Thursday after a long time of suspension.
Earlier on Tuesday evening, the Ro-Ro ferry Birshreshtha Jahangir had got stuck in the channel's underwater Char. At that time the ferry service was suspended on the route. As a result, more than six hundred vehicles were seen stranded at Kathalbari Ghat in Shibchar. However, ferry service has resumed from Thursday morning on a limited scale.
According to Kathalbari Ghat sources, ferry services are being disrupted due to the strong current in the Padma River. Movements of dump ferries have been closed most of the time. Of the total 18 ferries on the route, only seven, including three ro-ro, are operating. The Ro-Ro ferry that was stranded in underwater char on Tuesday evening has been rescued.
Abdul Alim, manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Kathalbari ferry terminal, confirmed the information.
He said that the ferry has been operating since early today. However, the movement is being disrupted due to underwater char and strong currents.
