Launch and ferry services have been halted at Shimulia in Munshiganj and Banglabazar in Madaripur due to hostile weather. The Padma River is turbulent due to the effect of cyclone Yaas. All types of naval vessels have been anchored at the terminal in the two ghats to avoid accidents.
All types of ferries were shut down since morning on Wednesday. Earlier, the launch movement was suspended from 5 pm yesterday.
81 launches were halted from 5 pm yesterday. There have been strong waves and wind in the river since this morning, said Md. Shahadat Hossain, Assistant Director of the Division of Maritime Safety and Traffic Management and Assistant Port and Transport Officer (Additional Duties).
Prafulla Chauhan, manager of BIWTC’s Shimulia Ghat, said there were strong waves and wind in the turbulent Padma River. Ferry movements were not possible in this weather, as a result, 15 ferries, big and small, have been halted from 8 am. “The ferry service will not start until the weather is favorable,” he added.
Mawa traffic police inspector Md. Hafizul Islam said more than 450 vehicles were waiting for crossing at Shimulia Ghat.
