Sheikh Russel Water Treatment Plant inaugurated

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday inaugurated the Sheikh Russel Water Treatment Plant in Chattogram under the jurisdiction of Chattogram WASA at meeting up the growing demand of pure drinking water of the localities.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the plant named after her youngest brother through a video conference from her official Ganabhaban residence in the capital this morning. 

Chattogram Wasa Managing Director (MD) AKM Fazlullah said that the project was adopted and started its implementation process as a project of the Madunaghat Water Treatment Plant in 2011. However, its construction started in 2014.  

Tk 1890.82 crore was spent to build the Sheikh Russel Water Treatment Plant having the capacity of producing 92 crore litres per day. It will increase pure drinking water coverage to 90 percent from the existing 65 percent in Chattogram. 

The new plant jointly funded by the government, World Bank and Chattogram Wasa.

“There won’t be any problem in water supply after 2021,” said the Wasa Managing Director.  

Wasa Executive Engineer Soumitra Paul said they are thoroughly testing the water and supplying it after ensuring quality. “We haven’t found traces of bacteria or other germs in the treated water. The city residents can drink the water without boiling,” he said.
