Shariatpur teacher murder: Four to die, 9 get life term

A Dhaka court sentenced four people to death and nine others to life imprisonment for killing a headmaster of a high school in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila.
Judge Md Monir Kamal of Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka pronounced the verdict on Wednesday.
Mahbubur Rahman, Special Public Prosecutor of the tribunal, confirmed the information.
The death-row convicts are - Nuruzzaman Khan, Jahangir Matbar, Julhas Matbar and Chan Mia. Each of them was also fined Tk 20,000.
The convicts sentenced to life imprisonment - are Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Halim Mollah, Azizul Matbar, Faruk Khan, Azahar Matbar, Mizan Mir, Akhter Gazi, Jalil Matbar, Emdad Matbar and Lal Mia. They were also fined Tk 20,000 and they will have to suffer six-month imprisonment in default.
On the other hand, the court acquitted Ajibar Bali, Abdul Khandaker, Khokon Bepari, Azahar Mollah and Sorab Mollah as the allegations against them were not proved.
On January 17 in 2010, Chikandi Safar Ali High School's headmaster Abdus Samad Azad was shot by an armed gang shot while he was gossiping with some locals at the bazaar. When he fell down, the assailants stabbed him indiscriminately leaving him dead on the spot.
Later, his wife filed a case against 30 people including the then chairman Halim Mollah and former chairman Ajibar Bali and 15/20 unidentified persons with the Palang police station in Shariatpur.
On August 14 of the same year, Palang police station sub-inspector Shahidul Islam submitted a chargesheet against 18 people. However, the plaintiff refused to file the chargesheet. Later on May 11, 2011, SI Sultan Mahmud of the same police station submitted a chargesheet against 19 people.
