Left-hand batsman Najmul Hossain Shanto got his first Test hundred in the first innings of the first Test against host Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium at Kandy on Wednesday. The southpaw reached the magic figure off 235 balls with the help of 12 fours and one six.

At the end of overs 83, Bangladesh were 276/2. Shanto and Mominul were in the batting scoring 113 and 59 respectively.

Earlier, after winning the toss Bangladesh chose to bat first but they lost opener Saif Hasan (0) in the second over.

Tamim kept the runs flowing with his stroke-filled batting and got support in Nazmul Hossain Shanto, who showed his utter stubbornness in the crease.

They eventually shared 144-run for the second wicket stand and it was broken only when Vishwa Fernando undid Tamim Iqbal with a delivery that carried extra bounce. Tamim struck 15 boundaries in his 90 off 101.

Shanto played as the second fiddle to Tamim initially but after the dismissal of senior mate, he came out from the shell to take the onus.

Skipper Mominul Haque also gave him the necessary support to keep the side rolling and together they kept the Lankans at bay on a hot and humid day in Pallekele.

They so far shared 56 runs till Tea session for the third wicket stand.

After tea break, Shato reached his magic figure of three-digit hitting a four.
