Due to the efficient management of the government, the death rate in Bangladesh is lower than in Europe and America. Even then, the way BNP leaders and activists seem to be talking as if they have been given the responsibility of advisors to the World Health Organization (WHO), said Information Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud during an exchange of views with journalists at the Awami League President’s political office in Dhanmondi on Saturday.

Asking the BNP to look at the world, including the surrounding countries, the information minister said, “The rate of coronavirus infection in Pakistan is higher than ours. Infection in India has surpassed China. The death rate in Belgium is 15 percent while 14 percent in Britain, 3.2 percent in India, and over 2 percent in Pakistan. But the death rate in Bangladesh is 1.35 percent. The death rate could have increased if the health service system was bad.”

“Thanks to the constant monitoring of the Prime Minister and the tireless efforts of all concerned, we have been able to reduce the death rate.”

He said, "I will request the BNP to stand by the people without lying. And our door is open. If necessary, you can work with us to help the people.”

The Awami League Joint General Secretary also said that relief is being given to those people who are in need. Despite the no demands, the Qawmi madrassas have received assistance. Assistance has also reached the mosques before Eid. The Prime Minister is assisting the helpless of various professions including journalists and artists. “I would like to see whether BNP is involved in relief and assistance activities anywhere in the country.”

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken various steps to protect the people of the country after seeing the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China. Everyone who came from other countries, including China, was sent to ‘home’ and ‘institutional’ quarantine. All cargo ships arriving in the country have been allowed to dock only after checking their health and keeping them at bay. There were also arrangements for land ports. “Even then, on March 8, the first coronavirus patient was identified in the country. Other countries of the world also took various steps. However, no country has been free from the virus.”

The Information Minister said the Prime Minister's dynamic leadership and timely prudent decision have dispelled all fears. She launched the largest relief operation in the country’s history after announcing a public holiday to protect the country from coronavirus.

“Six crore people have received relief and another one crore people have received various assistance under the management of the government. Besides, the Awami League has provided relief to 12 million families. Which is unthinkable and no other political party has done it. That is why, despite the closure of almost all the works for the last two months, not a single person has died of starvation due to the grace of the Almighty Allah and our efforts,” he added.

Awami League Health Secretary Dr. Rokeya Sultana, Office Secretary Barrister Biplob Barua, Deputy Publicity Secretary Aminul Islam Amin, and Deputy Office Secretary Sayem Khan were present at the time.
