The second consignment of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine, produced by Serum Institute of India, will arrive in the country on February 22, said Nazmul Hasan Papon, managing director of Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

He came up with the comments after receiving the first dodge of corona jab at Kurmitola General Hospital in the capital on Monday.

There are more than 60 lakh dodges of vaccines in stock in the country. So it has been decided to bring 30 lakh dodges vaccines in the second shipment. However the actual number could be more or less, Papon said.

“I’ve been saying from the beginning, Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has efficacy. The vaccine is the safest,” he said.

On January 21, Dhaka received 2 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine as the Indian government sent the jabs as a gift to Bangladesh.

On January 25, Bangladesh received the first consignment of 50 lakh doses of Covishield, the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Oxford-AstraZeneca and manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII).

In November last year, the government of Bangladesh, Beximco Pharmaceuticals, and Serum Institute of India (SII) entered into a tripartite agreement to buy 30 million doses of Covishield, SII's brand name for the vaccine developed by Oxford University and British-Swedish pharma giants AstraZeneca.

It may be mentioned that Bangladesh started a vaccination drive on January 27 at Kurmitola General Hospital in the capital. The program was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through videoconference. On that day, 25 people were vaccinated against coronavirus. A total of 541 people were vaccinated at five hospitals in the capital on January 28, the second day of the vaccination drive. Later on February 7, vaccination drives started across the country. On this day, 31,160 people were vaccinated across the country. So far 9,06,033 people have been vaccinated against corona across the country.
