The schedule for the second phase of Union Parishad elections has been announced. Polls to 848 Union Parishad will be held in this phase on November 11. 

EC Secretary Humayun Kabir Khandaker made this announcement at the end of the 86th meeting of the commission at Election Building on Wednesday. 

Besides, the EC also announced the date of Sirajganj-6 constituency by-polls, which was declared vacant by the National Assembly, will be held on November 2.

The last date for submission of nomination papers of the aspirants in the election is October 17, while the nomination papers will be scrutinised by the commission officials on October 20. The last date for withdrawal of candidacy is October 26.

Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used in 20 of the 848 UPs in the second phase, the EC secretary said. It is learned that the decision for the third phase of UP elections may be taken next week.

The meeting was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda and other officials including other commissioners were present at the meeting.

Incidentally, the Election Commission announced the schedule for 371 UPs in the first phase on March 3, leaving the polling date on April 11. But the vote was postponed due to corona situation. Later, the EC rescheduled the polls and on June 21, the EC held polls to 204 UPs then. Of the 167 suspended UPs, polls to 160 were held on September 20.
