Four people, including a schoolboy, were killed by lightning strikes at Ullapara and Shahjadpur upazilas in Sirajganj. The incident took place at Bangala, Udhunia, Kayempur and Narina Unions of Ullapara Upazila around 5pm on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Abdullah, son of Amanat Hossain of Char Angaru village in Kayempur union of Shahjadpur upazila, Alhaj Baburchi, son of Jalal Uddin of Batia village in Narina union, Rafiqul Islam, son of Mohammad Ali of Angaru Baghmara village in Salanga union, Faridul Islam, a ninth-grader and son of Shahed Ali of Agdighal village of Udhunia UP of Ullapara.

Abul Kalam, a member of Ward No. 9 of Kayempur UP, said Abdullah was harvesting paddy in a field near his house in Char Angaru village of Kayempur Union on Sunday afternoon. He died on the spot when a thunderbolt struck him. 

Altaf Hossain, a local from Batia village of Narina UP, said Alhaj Baburchi of Batia village was drying paddy in the field next to his house with his wife in the afternoon. When they were returning home Alhaj Baburchi was struck by lightning and died on the spot.

Udhunia union chairman Abdul Jalil said Faridul Islam was killed by a lightning strike while harvesting paddy in the field in the afternoon.

Former chairman of Salanga Union Parishad Shafi Kamal Shafi said that on Sunday morning, Rafiqul Islam was returning home from Daryal Beel in the neighboring Bangala Union. On the way, he was struck by a thunderbolt and died on the spot.
