300 Sawdagor families, a small community living in boats on the Dakatia River in Chandpur, have been deprived of civic benefits for a long time.

While visiting behind the Press Club Ghat in Chandpur town, Chowdhury Ghat No. 10 and Ghat No. 5 on the banks of the Dakatia River, it was seen that the members of the community building temporary houses on bamboo platforms. Although the houses are come in handy in the drought, however in the rainy season, boats become their only shelter.

Rezia Begum, Shahnaz Begum and some others of the community said their life depend on fishing. They somehow survive on what they earn by selling them in the market. However, if there is a storm, they have to spend the day without food.

“Our children were born in boats. Parents also died in the boat,” said another one named Abdul Karim.
