India’s veteran actress Swatilekha Sengupta has passed away at the age of 71.
The veteran actress, who played the role of ‘Bimala’ in Satyajit Ray’s ‘Ghare-Baire’, breathed her last after suffering from a cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday.
Swatilekha Sengupta had been suffering from kidney problems for a long time. She was undergoing dialysis. The veteran actress was even admitted to the ICU in a hospital for 21 days.
Swatilekha Sengupta started her acting career in 1984 with Soumitra Chatterjee and Victor Banerjee. Even today, the viewers of the Bengali film are praising the performance of ‘Bimala’ of Satyajit Ray’s famous film ‘Ghare-Baire’. Since then, fans have liked the pair of Soumitra-Swatilekha.
However, Swatilekha was not seen outside the stage after ‘Ghare-Baire’. After 31 long years, she returned to the screen with Soumitra. She was seen on the big screen with the hands of producer-director Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee.
After seeing the chemistry of Soumitra-Swatilekha in the film ‘Bela Sheshe’, they acted in ‘Bela Shuru’ again for the audience. But both the actor and actress left the world before the picture was released. Soumitra Chatterjee died in November last year. Swatilekha also left on Wednesday.
