The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) has stayed the ban ordered by the High Court on the advertisements during the news on private television channels in the country.
The Appellate Division headed by the Chief Justice passed the order on Sunday. Following the verdict, there has no bar to broadcast commercial advertisements in news segments, the lawyers said.
Earlier on May 6, 2019, the High Court banned broadcasting any kind of commercials in news segments of the television channels.
The HC bench comprising Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Shashank Shekhar Sarkar passed the order after holding hearing on a writ filed in this regard.
A schoolteacher named MA Matin filed the writ in 2011, saying such acts can bring question mark on the neutrality of the TV news. The High Court later issued a rule on the matter.
