Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia has supported Iran for permanent members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at a news conference in New Delhi on Saturday.

The Russian Foreign Minister said, “Iran is an observer member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and Russia and most of SCO member states support Iran's request for permanent membership in the organization.”

In order to strengthen political, economic and security cooperation, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was announced at a conference held in Shanghai City, China in 2001. Russia is currently the president of the organization.

In the beginning, the member countries of this organization were Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Later, India and Pakistan were granted temporary membership in the organization.

Apart from Iran, Afghanistan, Mongolia, and Belarus also serve as observers of the organization.
