Today is the 63rd birth anniversary of the ‘defendant romantic’ poet Rudra Muhammad Shahidullah. The poet was born on 16 October 1956 in Barishal.
Rudra Muhammad Shahidullah was the symbol of youth and rebellion. His love for the land and the people earned him recognition as one of the greatest poets of the seventies.
The poet was born into an upper-middle-class family. Rudra passed SSC in 1974 from Dhaka West and High School and HSC in 1976 from Dhaka College. Then he was admitted to the Bangla department of Dhaka University and obtained a BA degree with honors in 1980 and an MA degree in 1983.
He was one of the initiators of the formation of the Combined Cultural Alliance and the National Poetry Council and the founding joint secretary of the National Poetry Council.
After 1975, he actively participated in all anti-government and anti-authoritarian struggles. For this, he is known as the Defendant Poet. Bangladesh’s Liberation War, patriotism, mass movement, and secularism are strongly present in his poems.
The short-lived poet died on June 21, 1991, at the age of 35.
In his small life-time, besides his seven books of poetry, he has written stories, poems, written more than fifty songs, and composed melodies. His ‘Bhalo Achi Bhalo Theko’ is still the most popular Bangla songs.
