The reactor at the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project – the main part of the power plant – the largest and most economically costly project in the country in the last 50 years since independence, will be installed on October 10, Sunday. With this, the milestone progress of the project is going to be achieved.

According to project sources, the nuclear power plant that produces electricity from nuclear fuel or Uranium – its main structure is the reactor. This is the vital force of a nuclear power plant.

It is learned that the construction work of the first unit will be completed in 2023 and the second unit in 2024. Once the reactor is installed, it will not take long for the project to be completed. The intricate work of the power plant is almost over. This year, 50 percent of the work of the first unit of the project will be completed.

The main work of this project started in November 2017, inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, by casting concrete in the reactor building. Since then, about 25,000 local and foreign workers, engineers and experts have been working on the project every day.

The concrete casting at the second unit of the project was inaugurated in June of the following year. At that time, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Deputy Prime Minister of Russia were present on the occasion.

The work of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is being carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Science and Technology. In this, Russia is cooperating financially and technically. Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation-Rosatom is implementing the project.

Regarding the installation of the reactor at the first unit of the project, Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman said, “We have made great progress. So we can say that the project will be completed on time.”

Meanwhile, all the equipment of the Rooppur project has been made in Russia. These machines are built in different factories there and sent to Bangladesh by sea. The reactor of the second unit also arrived in August this year.

Dr. Shawkat Akbar, project director of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, said four of the six main components have already been installed. Now remaining work – the reactor pressure vessel will be installed on October 10. All the important equipment of the first unit is already sitting.
