At least nine people were killed and another 14 injured in riots at a prison which is situated in the central province of Goias in Brazil, local police says on Monday.

Police officials said that the incident occurred in a clash between two groups in the prison. They also said the opposition party had cut off one`s head during the day. But the situation is now under control.

The British media confirmed that more than 100 prisoners have escaped from jail after the riots. At least nine inmates killed in the prison, one of the victims was decapitated.
The riot began in the afternoon of New Year`s Day at the rural penitentiary in the outskirts of the state capital, Goiania. About 30 people have been re-arrested again after fleeing from jail. But more than 80 prisoners are still absconding.

Lieutenant-Colonel Hrillner Braga Ananias said, "It was a clash between prisoners and it is all under control now."

Muana Cristina, one of prisoners’ sister told O Popular newspaper that her brother is inside and she has no information about him. She also added no one tells them anything, no one tells them who is dead, who is alive and who is shot.

Brazil has one of the largest prison populations in the world. The country`s jails are largely controlled by powerful criminal factions that have access to drugs, mobile phones, and weapons. So, riots are common in Brazilian prisons.
