Rifat murder: Three-tier strict security at Barguna court

The verdict to 14 juvenile accused in the murder case of Rifat Sharif in Barguna will be announced on Tuesday.  Barguna Children’s Court Judge Md. Hafizur Rahman will announce the verdict. Meanwhile, the members of the law enforcement have set up a Three-tier strict security cordon in the Barguna court premises. 

Strict police guards have been posted at the court premises and entrances. Some lawyers of the state and the accused have appeared in the court. Law enforcers are patrolling inside the court wearing white clothes and uniforms. Everyone is being searched while entering the court premises.

Barguna Additional SP (Headquarters) Muharram Ali said a strict security cordon has been set up in the vicinity of the court following the verdict in the case. The six accused in the case in the district jail will be produced in court in due course.

Meanwhile, Md. Abdul Halim Dulal Sharif, Rifat’s father and the plaintiff in the case, said, “I have firm faith in the court. I will respect the court’s verdict of the court. I believe only those who are involved in the murder of my son will be punished.” 

After hearing the arguments of the two sides in the case on October 14, the judge of the Barguna Children's Court Md. Hafizur Rahman set the date for the verdict.

The 14 juvenile accused in the case are — Rashidul Hasan Rishan Faraji, 17, Md Rakibul Hasan Rifat Hawlader, 15, Md Abu Abdullah Raihan, 16, Md Oliullah Oli, 16, Joy Chandra Sarker alias Chandan, 17, Md Naim, 17, Md Tanvir Hossain, 17, Nazmul Hasan, 14, Rakibul Hasan Niamat, 15, Md Saiyed Maruf Billah Mohibullah, 17, Maruf Mallik, 17, Prince Molla, 15, Ratul Shikdar Joy, 16, and Aryan Hossain Srabon, 16. 

Nayan Bond and his accomplices publicly hacked Rifat Sharif with machetes in broad daylight on June 26, 2019, in front of Barguna Government College and seriously injured him. The injured Rifat later died at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

On September 1, police filed a chargesheet against 24 people, including Rifat’s wife Minni, in the Rifat Sharif murder case with the Barguna Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court. At the same time, the prime accused in the Rifat murder case, Nayan Bond, was killed in a gunfight, so he was acquitted.

On January 1, the Barguna District and Sessions Judge’s Court framed charges against 10 adults accused in the Rifat murder case. On the other hand, on January 8, the Barguna Children’s Court framed charges against 14 juveniles accused in the Rifat murder case. 

According to court sources, after the testimony of 74 witnesses against the 14 juvenile accused in the Rifat murder case, the court set October 27 for giving the verdict. 

Earlier on September 30, the Barguna District and Sessions Judge’s Court has sentenced six out of 10 adults accused, including Ayesha Siddika Minni, to death in the murder case of Shahnawaz Sharif alias Rifat Sharif.
