Rickshaw pullers block Dhaka streets protesting ban

Rickshaw pullers blocked some streets of the capital protesting against the ban of rickshaws on roads. They are blocking the streets demanding rickshaw movement in all the streets of the capital.

They are blockade the Malibagh, Rampura’s Wapda Road, North Badda, and Kuril Bishwa Road from 8:00 am on Tuesday.  

During this, rickshaw pullers are seen to give slogan, ‘Whether there are roads, the rickshaw will be run there, movement of rickshaw will continue’

Regarding the blockade in Rampura, rickshaw puller Milon said, “Our movement is going on in protest against the ban of rickshaws from roads. This movement will continue until 1:00 pm.” 

“If the demands do not meet today, the movement will continue for seven hours on Wednesday,” said Siraj Mia, a rickshaw puller of Kuril Bishwa Road. 

Badda Police Station SI Mannan said, “Traffic movements on the road was closed. Rickshaw pullers took positions in front of the North Badda’s Fuji Tower from 8:00 am.”

“Senior officials of the police including the OCs are in duty in the area. Trying to withdraw them from streets by explaining,” he said.  

Earlier, on July 3, a decision was taken to ban the movement of rickshaws on the main road in a first meeting of the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) in DNCC’s Nagar Bhaban. 

According to the decision, on July 7, rickshaws, other illegal and non-sanctioned vehicles including van were closed on three roads of two routes.   

As a result, rickshaws are not allowed from Gabtoli to Mirpur Road via Azimpur, and Science Lab to Shahbagh  and from Kuril to Badda, Rampura, Khilgaon to Sayedabad
