The government has decided to sell rice at a rate of Tk 10 per kg from April 5 under special OMS (Open Market Sell) activities in all the divisional and district cities including Dhaka for the working people who are staying at home due to the influence of the coronavirus outbreak.

It is learned that rice was selling at OMS at Tk 30 per kg. The price has been reduced to Tk 10. As a result, rice selling at a new price will start on Sunday.

According to a policy issued on Thursday from the Ministry of Food, a consumer will be able to buy five kg of rice once a week by showing his NID card. No more than one family can buy rice. The rice will be sold every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Three tonnes per day will be provided at each center in Dhaka and two tonnes in each center outside Dhaka.

The policy also stated that centers should be set up in areas where the underprivileged people live. Special programs should be conducted under the supervision of the local administration, law enforcement or public representatives.

According to the Ministry of Finance sources, about one lakh tonnes of rice was allocated in the current fiscal for OMS activities at a cost of Tk 30 kg in the capital. So far only one thousand tonnes have been sold. This rice, bought at a price of Tk 43 kg, will be sold at a subsidy of Tk 34. An additional Tk 61 crore has been allocated for the revised budget.

As per Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), the current rice price in the market is Tk 38 to Tk 50 per kg which was Tk 35 to Tk 38 at the beginning of last month.

In a speech addressed to the nation on March 25, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina talked about selling rice at Tk 10 per kg through OMS.
