A murder case has been filed against 9 people, including Teknaf Police Station OC Pradeep Kumar Das and Baharchara check post-in-charge Liaquat Ali, in connection with the murder of retired Army Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan in a police firing.
Major Sinha’s sister Sharmin Shahria has lodged the case with the Cox's Bazar Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. In the meantime, the court directed the RAB to investigate the case.
On July 31 night, former Major Sinha Rashed Khan was shot dead by police at the Baharchara check post in Shamlapur UP on Marine Drive Road in Teknaf.
In the incident, a four-member committee was formed led by the Additional Divisional Commissioner of Chattogram Division Mohammad Mizanur Rahman – after the question raised by the police details.
The committee has been directed to conduct an on-the-spot inquiry into the cause of the incident and give its views on what can be done to prevent such incidents in the future. The investigation committee has been on the ground since Tuesday to investigate the incident.
Besides, police personnel involved in the incident have also been withdrawn.
Sinha Rashed left Dhaka for Cox’s Bazar on July 3 to make a travel video for a YouTube channel called ‘Just Go’. He was accompanied by three students from the Department of Film and Media at Stamford University. They were staying at Nilima Resort in the Himchari waterfall area on Marine Drive Road and shooting at different places in Cox's Bazar for a month.
It is learned that on July 31 afternoon, Sinha and Sifat went out in a private car for shooting. On the way back after the shooting, Sinha’s car first stopped at a BGB check post. After receiving their identities, the BGB members released them. At around 9:00 pm, Sinha Rashed’s private car reached the Shamlapur police check post in Baharchara UP, Teknaf via Marine Drive Road and was stopped by Inspector Liaquat Ali, in-charge of the police outpost. It was there that Major Sinha was shot dead by Inspector Liaquat Ali.
It is worth to be mentioned that Sinha Rashed’s father, Freedom Fighter Ershad Khan, was the Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. In 2018, Major Sinha Rashed voluntarily retired from the army. While in office, he also served in the Special Security Forces (SSF) for the Prime Minister’s security.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called Nasima Akter, mother of Former Army officer (Major) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan, and expressed her condolences. The information was given in a press release signed by the Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim on Tuesday evening. The Prime Minister assured the family of the deceased of a proper investigation and trial.
