Bangladesh has reported the highest number of new coronavirus deaths within a single day amid a strict lockdown imposed to contain the surge in infections. 

The government’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in its routine daily statement on Tuesday said 247 deaths and 14,925 cases were reported in the last 24 hours, taking death toll to 19,779 and the total caseload to 11,94,752 and since the pandemic began in March last year.

The highest 84 deaths were reported in Dhaka division while 61 died in Chattogram division. Among the dead, 138 were male and 120 were female.

DGHS said 28.44 percent of the 52,478 samples collected in 24 hours were tested positive.

The recovery count rose to 10,22,414 after another 12,439 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the same time.

The DGHS statistics showed of the people infected from the beginning, 85.58 percent recovered, while 1.66 percent died.

Earlier, daily highest 247 Covid-19 deaths and 15,192 cases were reported on Monday (July 26).
