Agriculture Minister Dr. Abdur Razzak says the main raw material of the garment industry is textiles. Earlier we used to import this cloth. But with the growth of the textile industry, fabrics are being manufactured in the country.

On Thursday, the minister mad this remark while he was talking after meeting with a delegation of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTM) led by Prime Minister's Private and Investment Advisor Salman F Rahman at the minister's office room at the Secretariat.

The Agriculture Minister said, "We are the ones who approve the import of cotton." There is a fee for this. Moreover, after importing cotton, fumigation is done on the port to check if there are any germs, and importers have to pay for this.

Referring to the fact that the charge area has been increased by up to 10 times in several sectors for the import of cotton, he said it would affect the 'Ease of Doing Business' index. So the minister has assured to reduce these fees.

Abdur Razzak added, "Earlier, we used to earn a lot of foreign currency by exporting golden fiber jute. That has come down a lot. Now, about 80% of export earnings are being made by exporting readymade garments.
