The Forest Department constructed the Watchtower at Jalarban Ratargul of Goanaighat in Sylhet in 2014 to overlook the entire forest from one place. The watchtower was built six years ago but now it has become risky for visitors. The forest department has recently declared the tower risky and banned visitors from climbing up to the tower.

"It was risky for a long time. We earlier put up a signboard instructing that only 4-5 persons can climb up the watchtower at a time. Nearly 40-50 tourists climb up regularly, which poses serious threats. So we banned visitors from climbing this tower. The decision on the tower will be taken later after talking to the engineers," said Saad Uddin Ahmed, forester of Sylhet Forest Division.

Some visitors said it was their responsibility to control the temptation to see the entire water forest from one place. So we take risks.

Ratargul Swamp Forest is an area of 504.50 acres and was declared as a 'Reserve Forest' in 1973. The entire area surrounded by rivers and haors is an attractive place for nature lovers.
